As an industry standard, usually files with sizes of 1.8mb are the maximum size that should be sent.
Check the size of your files is easy, select your files to send then right click, properties
give your file size e.g. Size: 2.25 MB (2,359,350 bytes) is too large

There are a number of ways one should send large files
(Using one method should solve the problem)

• Use jpg if you are sending pictures. Compress files with utility like WinZip to compress the 
  files to be sent, before sending the files make sure the total size is below 2 Mb 
  
  
• You should check the size and send the photos in multiple e-mails, if you suspect the files
  are large. Instead of sending 6 or 8 pictures, break it up and send 2 or 3 at a time.
  
  
• In Outlook Express Tools, Accounts, Mail Tab, Properties, Advanced.
  Check " Break apart message ... " and placing 1536KB makes breaks file size into 1.5Mb
  segments before sending, while the receiver will rebuild the e-mail to original.
  Note: This will only work if both sender and receiver is using Outlook Express.
